How do you clean a hand painted canvas tote bag?

We've all been there. A leaking juice bottle, a sudden mishap with a coffee cup or general wear marks.

Our Hand-painted tote bags are made with paint and mediums specifically formulated to go on fabric and are heat set prior to going out to our customers. These trusty companions can withstand washing without the paint smudging and smearing. These tips can relate to any hand-painted tote bag but please follow the care label as we don't specifically know what materials other retailers use.

A care label is attached to each tote bag for sale but if you would like a more detailed description please read on find out how to clean your trusty everyday essentials bag.

What you will need:

  •  A mild laundry detergent
  • A washing machine or bucket of water
  • Sponge or toothbrush

Step 1: Consider spot cleaning

We highly recommend spot cleaning canvas bags to keep the quality of fabric pristine. You can do this by soaking a sponge in a specific canvas cleaner or in water mixed with a small amount of laundry detergent. Once the sponge is soaked, dab the affected area or use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the mark out.

Step 2: Washing

If the bag needs an all-over general wash. Wash the bag separately in a washing machine on a gentle cycle using only cold water and laundry detergent. You can also hand wash if preferred.

Step 3: Minimising shrinkage

Canvas naturally shrinks when washed. To minimise shrinkage, take the bag immediately out of the washing machine and while still wet, tug the fabric out with hands. The hand-painted tote bags we use are thick so you can use a bit more force.

Step 4: Ironing

While the bag is still slightly damp, turn the bag inside out and iron the bag on a high or canvas specific setting.

Step 5: Drying

To not tumble dry. Always hang to dry.
